Eberhardt Hall

Hello NJITians,

Eberhardt Hall, with its beautiful Elizabethan Gothic architecture, has always been the best place for a memorable graduation picture. Recently (during one of the NCE Dean Kam’s speeches), I learned some interesting historical facts about this place that I would love to share with you.

Eberhardt Hall was formerly known as the Newark Orphan Asylum. The Newark Orphan Asylum was completed in 1857 to house around 110 children aging between 2 to 12 years old. Unlike homes and facilities of that period, the Newark Orphan Asylum was equipped with “modern conveniences” such as hot running water, steam heat, and gaslights, as well as safety features such as fire-extinguishing systems.
