Abstract:Existing epidemiological models are limited in the optimization of resource allocation for controlling an epidemic outbreak. In this study, we address this core limitation and present a multi-stage stochastic programming epidemic compartmental model, which formulates varying treatment rates based on the available budget. We apply this model to study the case of Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa to minimize an overall expected number of infected individuals, considering possible infection scenarios. Our model is practical, and can be adopted to study other infectious diseases in complex situations.
